Fieldskills Adventures Up and Running
You may remember that in the last newsletter we wrote about the launch of exciting new adventure holidays with Fieldskills. We're delighted to say that the first of these trips have now run safely and successfully. A hardy group came up to the Lakes and their new found expedition skills were tested by heavy rain and gale force winds - but in spite of that had a wonderful weekend learning about navigation, jungle camping and open fire cooking and were rewarded with a glorious Sunday on the fells. You can see photos of their weekend in our online photo gallery. (See bottom of newsletter to win a free place on the next one...) Just a few weeks later the mountain biking team set off. Overcoming overgrown jungle trails and 'tropical' weather they completed a magnificent circumnavigation of Mount Kinabalu. We've put a video on the website to give you a feel for the trip. Both trips will be run again later in the year along with a Borneo twist on the Three Peaks Challenge and an amazing Sinai trek with the Bedouin and desert expert Sam McConnell.
News from Trainees Across the Globe
It's always great to hear from our trainees on where they take their training. In the last few months we've had trainees head off to Malawi, Tanzania and Greenland to name just a few and it's great to hear how the trips go. A team of glaciologists we trained in Bristol sent news of extreme cold, late melts, missing helicopters and communications challenges during their season to Greenland. But they are still out there working hard and we look forward to hearing more when they return. Round the World cyclist Ken Roberts also sent his latest update, "The wet season in Tropical North Queensland has been the toughest environment yet - Fieldskills training with Dom was a huge help." His top tips for riding in the tropics include the importance of good quality waterproof paniers and using old inner tubes to waterproof his bike! If you've trained with us do keep us updated on how you get on and we'd love to include your news in the next update.
Expedition Skills with Land Rover & WMT
We were delighted to work with industry leaders Land Rover and Wilderness Medical Training to run a joint expedition skills course covering everything from field risk management to navigation, campcraft and fire lighting, off road driving and Far from Help medical skills. We were lucky enough to get a visit from survival guru Lofty Wiseman and the course even culminated with a top view of Queen in concert with a fireworks display viewed from our hilltop camp! One client's feedback was typical, "Thanks to you and your team for a challenging, educating and thoroughly enjoyable course... I learnt a lot and it has instilled a desire to learn more and refine my new found skills".
Course Focus
Vehicle Safety and IOL Accredited Courses
We have two very exciting course developments coming up in the next few months. We are delighted to be working on a new course in vehicle safety - training people in assessing and managing the vehicles they use overseas. This course will launch in the Autumn and details will be released very soon but to be the first to know just drop Dom an email on dominic@fieldskills.com. The second exciting training development for us is that we have been involved in a pilot accreditation scheme through IOL and in the next few months we should be in a position to offer an IOL accredited Expedition Leadership Course.
