New climate study tower
We've been delighted to be involved with training and rope access support of the Safe Project, so we're really pleased that atmospheric measuring apparatus will be installed in the coming weeks at the massive new tower in Kalabakan, in Borneo. Another major step in a collaborative research programme focused on concerns regarding biodiversity loss and climate implications of conversion of forest to plantations.
QUIZ QUESTION: Test your knowledge:
You can check your answer on our website.
You are part of a team of four researchers working in the Musandam Penisular in the north of Oman. You have planned to work in pairs in the field collecting field sign of Arabian leopards. You are told that there is reasonable mobile phone reception in the area. What are the key elements of your safety and emergency plans?
Fieldskills Adventure in Guardian Top Ten
The launch of our 2012 expeditions was given a great boost when our Lakes expedition weekend was chosen by the Guardian as one of it's top ten health and fitness holidays for 2012. Our Toubkal expedition to Morocco filled up within just 3 weeks of putting it up on the website, so we've added another group for that trip. The Stok Kangri trip to the beautiful peak in Ladakh which Dom visited last year is also filling up fast. We are delighted to again be able to offer our Borneo mountain bike adventure and for those looking for an adventure closer to home we are getting very excited about the Lakes Expedition Week in our back yard. Take a look over all the 2012 adventures.
Jungle Gremlins of Java
Dr Anna Nekaris (photo top right) is the founder of the Little Fireface Project, an organisation dedicated to educating the world about lorises and ensuring their survival. She has also been a long term friend of Fieldskills since attending our field safety and first aid courses and then running it for students on her course. So we can't wait to see her make a big TV appearance on Jungle Gremlins of Java - BBC2 at 8pm on January 25, 2012.
She also has a great article in Wanderlust where you can learn all about her work with the endangered Loris, her recent work in Java and how Loris, the only poisonous mammal delivers it's venom!

Kit review
Just before Christmas Dom got his latest bit of kit to test - and where better than a drizzly cold day climbing in the Lakes.
His new Fuego Travel Jacket responded well to all these challenges overall. "On one of those typical days damp and blowy days I stayed pleasantly warm all day in spite of a consistent breeze and the fact that it was, afterall November".
You can read the full review on our website. A big thanks to Nomad who continue to support our work at Fieldskills - and remember you can all get 10% off any kit and equipment you order from Nomad travel store.

Bike Borneo
We've been running mountain biking trips out in Borneo for a number of years now but we're very excited to be launching a whole new mountain biking arm to the business, Bike Borneo.
Our first focus is on day rides out of Kota Kinabalu but there are all manner of exciting new MTB trips in the offing. As well as a great adventure it offers a unique and low impact way to get out and see the real Borneo and we are very exited about getting more people out to enjoy it with us.
