EXPEDITIONS | TRAINING | RESEARCH VOLUME 12 - FEBRUARY 2010
2010 courses in full swing So far this year we've trained students from the Universities of Leeds, Cranfield, Southampton, and Nottingham in First Aid & Fieldwork Safety. World Challenge staff were trained in off-site safety management, and from our permanent base in Cumbria, local businesses have been renewing their First Aid at Work qualifications. Our Outdoor First Aid course in Kendal was a huge success - we had a kayaking instructor come all the way from Oban to be with us! REMINDER: Book a course 1 month before & claim a 10% discount Still hankering for some winter fun? How does an Arctic Skills taster in Svalbard sound? Fieldskills trains leaders for BSES (British Schools Exploring Society) who are going to the jungle. BSES has just launched this two-week Arctic Skills taster course in Svalbard, 78 degrees North. Now you can learn winter mountaineering skills from pulk handling to polar bear defence, glacier travel and crevasse rescue, to expedition risk management and leadership skills. If this is your kind of thing and you’re over 24 years old, then put the 17 – 30th April in your diary! You can see the BSES website for more information or contact info@bses.org.uk Introducing mountain biking in Borneo For those who are travelling around Borneo and want to do something off the beaten track with added wow factor, or for those who want a once in a lifetime mountain biking holiday packed with jungles, local people, wildlife, and exhilaration…taking the opportunity to go mountain biking with our team in Borneo could be just the ticket! We have a dedicated Borneo website detailing what Sabah has to offer those of you who like to single track through life… Bear Babe gets Fieldskills Boost Bear Babe Leanne Franklin-Smith is setting forth to complete the Polar Challenge in April 2010. It’s a 320 nautical mile race from Northern Canada to the 1996 position of the magnetic North Pole; there are only two resupplies and has been described by Polar explorer and endurance expert Dr. Mike Stroud MBE as "The toughest challenge on Earth." Lee is raising money for charity Help for Heroes through this race – for the auction at her next big event (Heroes Ball, 16th March 2010) we’ve donated a day’s Fieldskills training for any of our courses…and if that isn’t incentive enough to dig deep and buy your ticket to the Heroes Ball, we don’t know what is! Fieldskills welcomes a new addition Izzy Jones, Environmental Biologist and soon to be Expedition Leader, has joined the Fieldskills team. Izzy has a background in overseas expeditions and fieldwork, and is helping spread the Fieldskills word. Fieldskills is making the most of Izzy before she forms part of a leader team taking a group of school children on a project-based expedition to Asia. Oh and then she’s off to climb Kilimanjaro. Please make Izzy feel like she’s doing a good job by coming on a course this year, or at least by becoming a Fan of Fieldskills on Facebook! Around the world with zero emissions On March 28th 2010 Kevin Shannon will be embarking on a three-year zero-emissions circumnavigation of the globe: cycling across five continents and sailing across two oceans with a bit of hiking and canoeing thrown in. The route takes Kevin from the UK through Europe to Russia, China, Australia and across the Pacific. Once on the other side, he will pedal his way up the west coast of the Americas to Canada, and across to the Atlantic where he will sail back to Europe. Kev is raising money for charity Combat Stress through this expedition. If you would like to read more about this exciting expedition, or make a donation please visit Kev’s website. We've given Kev a day's training in 'Outdoor First Aid: Emergency Action' as our way of sponsoring him, getting him underway as safely as possible.
