As an international expedition company, we've worked with groups all over the world and supported others in visiting even more through our unique expedition training. But we thought it was about time we brought some of these skills to exploring the amazing places on our doorstep in the Lakes.
If you love to talk expeditions - watch every new adventure travel program that comes out - love to learn new skills for being in the mountains or overseas travel - then this is the course for you.
Our unique Lakes expedition gives you the opportunity for a fun weekend in the Lakes - getting off the beaten track away from the usual tourist haunts. It will also give you quality time sat around the camp fire with our highly experienced expedition staff, a unique night camped out in hammocks in the lake district 'jungle' as well as time in the hills perfecting your navigation skills and even dealing with some emergency scenarios.
The aim is learning some new skills, a bit of a challenge in setting up your own unsupported camp in the woods and a reasonably challenging trek on the Sunday but it is not for only for the super fit and adventurous - it is designed to be a fun and very different way to spend a weekend.
Also if you are considering one of our longer overseas expeditions it's the perfect chance to get a feel for what we do, pick up some skills and chat about the trips.

Friday night
Arrive on the Friday evening at our unique site in a little visited corner of the Lakes. An informal camp fire dinner will be available for those who can arrive in time. The camp will be based around a beautiful yurt - you are welcome to curl up inside to sleep or bring a tent if you fancy a bit more privacy. The evening will be a good opportunity to chat around the camp fire, drink tea and meet our expedition staff and other fellow expeditioners.
Saturday:
After a short walk we will concentrate today on setting up our jungle campsite. We'll focus on a jungle environment learning about hammocks and bashas, and tropical camping skills though we will discuss the cross over with skills for other environments. You will learn how to safely use a machete to prepare firewood, and use that skill to build a fire and cook dinner. You will build a basic parachute shelter as a social area for the evening.
Time allowing we will learn some lost and search skills, navigation in the forest and skills which will help with the expedition day on Sunday.
You will put up your jungle hammock and basha, learning about life in the rainforest from our expert jungle expedition leaders and spend the evening enjoying the fruits of your labours with dinner over the open fire and a (hopefully) comfy night in your hammock.
Sunday
We'll get an early start (normally guaranteed by the night in your hammock!) and head off into the Lakes - we'll look at navigation, using GPS, managing emergencies in the field, lost and search procedures and head towards the beautiful Lake Coniston for a basic picnic lunch. We'll look at river crossings, safety on and around water before heading back to our original starting point for you to head off home.

Trip leader - Dom Hall:
Dom is one of the founders of Fieldskills and is based full time (when not rushing off round the country, or the world) in the Lakes. Despite all the travelling that remains one of his favourite places.
He got the expedition bug after University where a 5 month trip overseas developed into 2 years and, in turn, a career which has taken him to Oman, Borneo, Gabon, Egypt, Costa Rica, Peru... and many other places. He's led a wide range of youth, conservation and exploration trips mainly spending time in his hammock in the tropics.
He loves being at home in the Lakes and sharing his passion for expeditions and the outdoors with others so this is the perfect trip for him.
