Planning and Leading Expeditions requires a unique range of skills to dynamically assess a wide range of changing and unpredictable risks and manage emergencies in potentially remote environments. This course uses practical scenarios to give hands on experience of the pre-expedition planning and applying it in the field.
This course looks at the logistics of organising and leading
an expedition and follows the stages through from planning
on paper to applying this paperwork actively in the field.
It is essential to have a full understanding of the paperwork
involved in putting together a safe and successful expedition.
However the focus of this course is making this paperwork
into active documents which are adapted and applied in the
field.
It is appropriate for:
- Leaders who want to develop their expedition specific
skills.
- People with an outdoors background, interested in getting
into expedition work.
- The course has been very popular with University departments wanting to prepare students to plan their own fieldwork trips.
- Anyone planning or interested in running their own expeditions or overseas fieldwork projects.
Course Content:
The day is split broadly in two between planning on paper
and practical sessions to look at actively applying this paperwork:
Paperwork: We will look at the main documents which will form
a central part of any expedition plan - the Risk Assessment
and the Crisis Management Plan. We will also look at other
planning such as food and kit provisioning.
Practice: Risk assessments, crisis management plans etc are
too often seen as a necessary evil which take up a lot of
time and then sit mouldy in the bottom of a rucksack. Using
a combination of discussions and practical sessions we will
look at real life examples of why the paperwork is important
and how it can be actively applied and adapted in the field.
Prerequisites:
The course assumes no previous knowledge. However it is anticipated
that many of the participants will be active in the outdoors
professionally or personally. No previous experience is necessary
and it would equally suit anyone planning to get involved
in an expedition for the first time or just interested in
learning more.
