Mountain Safety Course

The beautiful and dramatic scenery of the World's mountainous regions draws adventure travellers, researchers and field researchers alike. The ability to manage yourself and others in this environment is vital to ensure safe and successful journeys in the mountains.

Course directed and written by MIA guides with huge overseas experience the course will be based in Snowdonia. It will give you the opportunity to wild camp whilst learning about operating safely in the mountain environment both in the UK and around the world.

As with our other safety courses the focus remains on everyday skills and appreciation of the environment.

Who is the course suitable for?

  • Researchers or adventure travellers planning trips in the mountains.
  • Leaders or outdoor instructors with plans or aspirations to lead expeditions in these regions.
  • Teachers going on expeditions to mountain destinations who want to feel informed and confident in the mountain environment.
  • Note it is envisaged that clients will not have formal mountain qualifications though those with, for example an ML, but interested in leading in the mountains overseas may also find the content valuable. It would provide valuable experience for those looking to progress to ML or WGL awards.

The essentials to ensure an enjoyable and safe expedition to the mountains:

Though not aiming to make you into a mountaineer overnight this course is a suitable introduction to working safely in the mountains. It aims to give you an awareness of safety issues and allow you to carry out research or work with teams safely in this environment.

The course will look at planning a route and basic navigation. You will then set out on your planned route to look at safety on steep ground, water hazards and setting up wild camps including managing your environmental impact. You will do a night navigation exercise before getting some well earned rest. The next morning you will return to the warmth of the classroom to look at issues for overseas expeditions such as altitude, the dangers of snow, ice and rock fall, health and hygiene and other country specific information.

FULL TWO DAY COURSE ONLY £120 (£100 for students)
