Desert Safety Course

The Desert is an environment of extremes. Extreme heat, at times extreme cold and of course, extreme dry. This course will teach you the essential skills you need to make your desert trip safe and successful.

Like all of our courses we combine environmental awareness with everyday practical skills. Together this will give the understanding to appreciate the environment and the ability to look after yourself and others whilst there.

Who is the course suitable for?

  • Leaders or instructors who want to lead expeditions in the desert.
  • Leaders with desert experience who want to benchmark current best practice.
  • Teachers going on expeditions to desert destinations who want to feel informed and confident in that environment.
  • Researchers or adventure travellers planning to travel in the desert.
  • Anyone who would like to understand and appreciate more about this environment.

This one day course covers the range of desert skills. We look at health and safety and desert hazards, kit and equipment and navigating in the desert. Sam McConnell to run 2010 course:

We are pleased to announce that this year's desert course is led by Sam McConnell. Sam is a reknowned desert explorer and expedition leader. He has led 78 safaris in Namibia as well as working in Sinai and around the world. He is perhaps best known for his solo, unsupported walk across the Dune Sea of the Namib desert in 2002. This one day course is a great chance to gain from Sam's experience. Sam also runs longer desert leadership courses over two weeks in the Sinai and this is a great place to start if you are interested in finding out more about those courses. You can find out more about Sam on his website.
