Under the Health and Safety (first aid) Regulations 1981 every organisation in the UK has responsibilities with regard to first aid provision. The HSE provides guidelines as to how many first aiders are needed and which courses they should attend. These courses meet these legal requirements as well as providing excellent detailed coverage of first aid for anyone wanting to gain skills for inside or outside of work.
NEW REGULATIONS - From October 2009
What are the new regulations?
- Following a review of UK first aid provision a new range of courses was approved by HSE from October 1st 2009.
- The New Courses are:
- Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW). New 1 day (6 hour) course formally accredited by the HSE called Emergency First Aid at Work. It covers basic life saving skills. It may be suitable for lower risk workplaces as well as for appointed persons wanting the confidence of having basic life saving skills.
- First Aid at Work (FAW). Based on the existing First Aid at work course - but now 3 rather than 4 days . This course deals with all the other first aid emergencies not covered in the shorter course including burns, eye injuries, soft tissue/bone injuries and common medical problems such as asthma and diabetes.
So which course do I need?
- Employers will be expected to risk assess their own first aid requirements and decide how many first aiders and which course they require.
- For example a small office based business may feel that 1 person attending the EFAW course is sufficient given the risks in their workplace.
- Larger businesses, undergoing more high risk activities may chose a range of Appointed Persons, EFAW and FAW.
- You may even decide that another course - for example outdoor first aid would be more relevant to your employees and what they do.
- If you'd like to discuss this in further detail please feel free to contact us for further details of what is most appropriate to your organisation or give us a ring on 0845 293 7296.

Other things to be aware of:
- Both courses are valid for three years. However the HSE will recognise that research has shown a high level of skill decay and will strongly recommend that FAW and EFAW holders also undergo a 3 hour refresher course every year.
- Appointed Persons, as under the previous regulations, will be responsible for first aid kit and managing first aid incidents. They are not required to carry out first aid training though many employers may still chose to put them on a one day first aid course to build confidence.

Run this course for your group : You choose the date and the venue contact us
Whilst we run these courses on a regular basis in Ulverston, Barrow, the South Lakes and Cumbria we also offer them in-house to businesses across the country.
If you have a group of people within your business who need training why not set up an in-house course. This often works out more financially and time efficient and allows the training to be tailored to your needs.
We can also design packages to include the EFAW, FAW and refresher programs.
Some examples:
For lower risk businesses: You could now have a package to get a number of people trained in EFAW (1 day course) plus two annual refreshers. This could enhance your overall provision with more first aiders doing regular training - and still cost less than you were paying out with the 4 day course.
For those needing the longer course: The new three day course can be packaged together with annual refreshers giving you more skilled first aiders without increasing your costs.
contact us to discuss a package that would suit you.
