Whole Fieldskills Group together in Maliau

This week our whole team from across the UK and Borneo came together to support British Charity Journey of a Lifetime Trust who are over half way through an amazing journey across Borneo. Their “tip to tip to top of Borneo journey” will take them across from Tanjung Datu National Park at the southern tip of Sarawak, to Sandakan in the East of Sabah and eventually end on the northern tip of the island. The team is made up of 24 disabled, ill, neglected and abused young people on a month-long trip. They have visited many great locations in Sarawak, Brunei and Sabah including Pulau Tiga, Tenom Agricultural Park, Maliau Basin, Balung Eco Resort, The Kinabatangan river and Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Still to come are the Sabah Tea Plantation before rafting on the Kiulu river, staying at the Meranjak Rungus Longhouse before visiting Kudat and finishing the adventure at the Tip of Borneo. Journey of a Lifetime believes that by exposing young people with difficulties and handicaps to the wider world and exposing them to a range of challenges they will learn to appreciate their true potential and as a result be able to take control of their lives. We are proud to be supporting the team in their journey across Borneo. This expedition has brought together all of Fieldskills’ abilities. The visit to the Maliau Basin in particular brought together the whole team including Dom Hall who with local expert Hanry Daud ran jungle survival skills sessions for the group, a large logistics team from Fieldskills Adventures under Simon managing jungle camping, food and transport and the Ropeskills Rigging team who used rope access techniques to allow all of the team including the wheel chair users to safely access Maliau’s canopy Sky Bridge. The amazing expedition continues into Sandakan area in the coming days and finishes at the Tip of Borneo in mid early August.
